About

Peter Milne is an observational astrophysicist whose work centers on gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), robotic telescope networks, and time-domain astrophysics. He is perhaps best known for his leading role in the study of ultra-long GRBs, exemplified by his highly cited 2013 paper on GRB 091024A (91 citations), which provided a broadband analysis of this exceptionally long-lived burst and helped define the nature of this rare class of events. Milne has also been instrumental in advancing robotic and rapid-response astronomy. He led the Super-LOTIS telescope project, a fully robotic 0.6-m system dedicated to GRB afterglow follow-up, and later spearheaded the development of the Arizona Robotic Telescope Network (ARTN), a major initiative to create a flexible, multi-telescope facility for survey projects and time-domain astrophysics. Beyond GRBs, his work includes X-ray and optical monitoring of classical novae in M31, contributing to the understanding of massive white dwarfs as Type Ia supernova progenitors. With a career spanning from transient detection to telescope infrastructure, Milne’s impact is felt both in the discoveries he has made and in the tools he has built for the community.
