A. C. Updike is an observational astrophysicist specializing in the study of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), with a particular focus on their prompt emission and early optical afterglows. Updike’s major contributions include the characterization of ultra-long GRBs, a rare and extreme subclass of bursts. In their highly cited 2013 work on GRB 091024A (91 citations), Updike led a broadband study using data from Konus-Wind, Swift, and Fermi, revealing prompt emission spanning over 1,300 seconds—far exceeding typical bursts—and demonstrating that such events are distinct from standard long GRBs.
