About

Patrick Jelinsky is a key architect of the robotic instrumentation powering the next generation of cosmological surveys. His primary research focus lies in the design and deployment of high-precision fiber-optic positioning systems for massive spectroscopic sky surveys, most notably the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). Jelinsky’s major contribution is the development of the robotic multi-object focal plane system that enables DESI’s revolutionary capability: 5,020 independently controlled fiber positioners that automatically retarget celestial objects every 10–20 minutes with micron-level precision. This breakthrough, detailed in his 2022 paper (175 citations), allows DESI to measure the spectra of 40 million galaxies and quasars, mapping the expansion history of the universe over 11 billion years. His earlier work on the BigBOSS experiment (80 citations) laid the foundational design for these positioners, while his 2024 overview of the DESI fiber system (57 citations) provides a comprehensive look at the instrument’s performance. Jelinsky’s engineering innovations have directly enabled Stage IV dark energy experiments to study baryon acoustic oscillations and cosmic structure growth at unprecedented scale and accuracy.
