About

M. Dufour’s research career has been defined by pioneering contributions to industrial active vision systems, with a particular focus on robotic welding, surface inspection, and thermal sensing. Dufour’s most influential work centers on the development of the dual imager—a double spectral image sensing device that uses a common objective, beamsplitter, and two CCD detectors to capture the same field of view. This innovation enabled real-time seam tracking, adaptive welding, and two-color pyrometry, even in harsh, noise-prone environments. Dufour’s early adaptation of a rapid image pre-processor—originally developed for the space shuttle arm—for multipass butt weld seam tracking demonstrated a remarkable ability to repurpose space technology for industrial automation. With over 20 citations across key papers, Dufour’s work has provided foundational solutions for noncontact, nondestructive quality control in manufacturing. Notably, Dufour’s analysis of environmental noise in active-vision systems helped advance the reliability of sensors for arc welding automation. For students and researchers in robotics, computer vision, or industrial automation, Dufour’s dual imager remains a landmark contribution to robust, real-time sensing under challenging conditions.
