About

Li-Chuan Lo is a researcher advancing the field of human–machine interaction through electromyography (EMG)-based control systems. His primary research areas include neuromuscular signal processing, joint kinematics, and torque estimation for robotic and assistive technologies. Lo’s major contribution lies in developing methods for simultaneous estimation of joint angle and torque from EMG signals during hand interactions with varying environments—a critical challenge for naturalistic control of prosthetics and exoskeletons. His work demonstrates how co-contraction of agonist and antagonist muscles can be decoded to modulate both limb position and joint stiffness, enabling more intuitive and adaptive control. His most-cited paper (2021, 7 citations) and its follow-up (2022) have laid groundwork for real-time, multi-degree-of-freedom control interfaces. While still early in his career, Lo’s focus on bridging neural signals with mechanical output addresses a fundamental bottleneck in wearable robotics. His research holds promise for restoring dexterous hand function in individuals with neuromuscular impairments and for enhancing human–robot collaboration in industrial settings.
