About
Julien Nembrini is a pioneering researcher in swarm robotics and swarm engineering, whose work has fundamentally shaped our understanding of how to build robust, decentralized multi-robot systems. His landmark 2006 paper, "Safety in numbers: fault-tolerance in robot swarms" (146 citations), critically examined the often-unquestioned assumption that swarms are inherently robust, providing the first rigorous empirical and theoretical analysis of swarm fault-tolerance. This work laid the foundation for a new discipline of swarm engineering, which he formally proposed in his 2005 paper "Towards Dependable Swarms" (78 citations). Nembrini's research addresses the core challenge of maintaining swarm coherence under realistic constraints, as demonstrated in his highly cited 2002 study on minimalist coherent swarming of wireless networked robots (80 citations), where communication range was deliberately limited to less than the swarm's diameter.
