Joel R. Brownstein is a key figure in the engineering and operations of large-scale astronomical spectroscopy, with his work forming the backbone of two of the most ambitious sky surveys ever conducted. His primary research areas center on the design, construction, and cyberinfrastructure of massive multi-object spectroscopic instruments. Brownstein made major contributions to the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), a Stage IV ground-based experiment designed to probe dark energy through baryon acoustic oscillations and redshift-space distortions. His work on the DESI instrument—a robotically-actuated, fiber-fed spectrograph—is detailed in a highly cited 2016 paper (234 citations).
