About
Gregory Tholey is a biomedical engineer whose research has fundamentally advanced the integration of haptic feedback and force-sensing technology in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and robot-assisted surgical systems. Working at the intersection of robotics, surgical instrumentation, and human-machine interaction, Tholey has dedicated his career to addressing a critical limitation of laparoscopic surgery: the absence of tactile and force feedback that surgeons rely upon during open procedures. His most influential contribution, "Force Feedback Plays a Significant Role in Minimally Invasive Surgery" (2005), has garnered over 320 citations and provided compelling experimental evidence that restoring haptic feedback meaningfully improves surgical performance. Complementing this landmark study, Tholey designed and developed a series of progressively refined automated laparoscopic graspers capable of measuring three-dimensional forces at the instrument tip — innovations documented across multiple well-cited publications from 2002 through 2008.
