About

Fabio Roncella is a leading figure in Antarctic infrared astronomy, recognized for his pioneering work in establishing Dome C as a premier site for ground-based thermal and far-infrared observations. His research focuses on the development and robotization of telescopes and instruments capable of operating in the extreme conditions of the Antarctic plateau, where exceptional coldness, low sky brightness, and minimal water vapor create the best Earth-based conditions for infrared astronomy. Roncella’s major contributions include his leadership on the International Robotic Antarctic Infrared Telescope (IRAIT) project, which demonstrated the feasibility of conducting sensitive observations in the 2.3–300 µm range from Dome C. His 2006 paper on IRAIT, with 25 citations, and his 2007 review on telescope robotization at Dome C, with 16 citations, are foundational works that have guided subsequent Antarctic observatory design.
