About

Chin‐Ta Lai is a leading figure in earthquake engineering and structural dynamics, with a focused expertise in the modeling and control of large-scale experimental facilities. His most significant contributions center on the dynamic characterization and performance enhancement of the UC San Diego Large High-Performance Outdoor Shake Table (LHPOST). Lai spearheaded the development of a comprehensive dynamic model for this unique six-degree-of-freedom system, which was upgraded from its original single-axis configuration. This work, published in 2024, is critical for accurately simulating and predicting the table’s behavior under complex, multi-axial seismic loading, thereby enabling more realistic testing of full-scale structures. His research directly supports the National Science Foundation’s Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure (NHERI) program, providing the analytical foundation for experiments that push the limits of resilience in civil infrastructure. With his papers accumulating citations that underscore their immediate relevance to the experimental earthquake engineering community, Lai’s achievements are instrumental in advancing the fidelity and capability of the world’s most powerful outdoor shake table, making him a key contributor to safer, more resilient communities.
