About

Boxuan Shen is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of DNA nanotechnology and synthetic biology, whose work is redefining how we engineer molecular-scale machines for biomedical applications. His most influential contribution, the 2020 paper "Robotic DNA Nanostructures" (167 citations), established foundational principles for creating dynamic, programmable DNA-based devices capable of executing complex mechanical tasks at the nanoscale. Building on this, Shen's landmark 2024 study "A DNA robotic switch with regulated autonomous display of cytotoxic ligand nanopatterns" (65 citations) represents a major breakthrough in targeted cancer therapy. In this work, he engineered a stimuli-responsive DNA robotic switch that can autonomously display death receptor–activating ligand patterns on tumor cells, triggering apoptosis while sparing healthy tissue—a critical advance in overcoming the toxicity limitations of conventional multivalent therapeutics. By integrating computational design with precise molecular engineering, Shen has demonstrated how DNA nanostructures can function as intelligent, environment-sensing robots. His research not only pushes the boundaries of nanorobotics but also offers a tangible pathway toward smart, programmable therapeutics that respond to specific biological cues.
