About
Alaa Alassi is a robotics researcher whose work focuses on advancing surgical robotics for minimally invasive procedures. His primary research areas include hyper-redundant robotic systems, force/torque sensing, and kinematic design for laparoscopic surgery. Alassi’s most notable contribution is a hybrid method for estimating 6-degree-of-freedom (DOF) tip forces and torques on a hyper-redundant surgical instrument, implemented on an in-house 11-DOF robotic forceps prototype. This work, published in 2019 with 11 citations, addresses a critical challenge in robotic-assisted surgery: providing accurate haptic feedback to surgeons without adding bulky sensors at the instrument tip. Additionally, Alassi developed a redundant, modular, and backdrivable laparoscopic surgery robot, combining a 7-DOF industrial arm with a remote center of motion mechanism.
