Metaphase refers to a specific stage of cell division during which chromosomes are maximally condensed and aligned along the cell's equatorial plane, making them most visible and analyzable under a microscope. In robotics and AI, metaphase detection and analysis is applied within automated cytogenetics systems — instruments and software that scan microscope slides or multiwell plates to locate, image, and score chromosomes without human intervention. Automated metaphase finders use computer vision and machine learning algorithms to identify suitable chromosome spreads, assess morphology, detect abnormalities such as dicentric chromosomes, and perform karyotyping at high throughput. These systems are critical in radiation biodosimetry, cancer diagnostics, and genetic screening, where technologies like fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and dicentric chromosome assays (DCA) require processing large sample volumes rapidly and consistently. Automating metaphase analysis reduces operator fatigue, increases reproducibility, and dramatically accelerates workflows that would otherwise depend on highly trained human scorers, making large-scale population screening and clinical diagnostics far more practical and scalable.
