About

Zhongjun Cheng is a leading researcher in bioinspired smart materials, with a focus on shape-memory polymers, switchable adhesives, and multifunctional actuators. His work draws inspiration from natural systems to create materials that can dynamically change their properties in response to external stimuli. Cheng’s most cited paper, “Triple-Bioinspired Shape Memory Microcavities with Strong and Switchable Adhesion” (2023, 37 citations), introduces a novel surface that can reversibly control adhesion to both solids and liquids, opening new possibilities for soft grippers, sensors, and robotic applications. He further advanced the field with a shape-programmable MXene-based supermolecular nanocomposite film (2022) and a heterogeneous architecture for light-responsive, stiffness-tunable magnetic actuators (2024), which addresses the longstanding challenge of combining high load capacity with rapid, easy deformation. These contributions demonstrate Cheng’s ability to integrate multiple stimuli-responsiveness into a single material platform. With growing citation impact and a clear trajectory toward practical applications in soft robotics and adaptive surfaces, Cheng is establishing himself as a key innovator in the next generation of intelligent, bioinspired materials.
