About

Zhiqiang Niu is a leading figure in the development of advanced nanomaterials for energy storage and electromechanical systems. His research focuses on designing hierarchical carbon-based architectures—particularly carbon nanotubes and graphene—to create high-performance electrodes for supercapacitors, batteries, and actuators. In a landmark 2011 study (159 citations), Niu introduced a novel bimorph electromechanical actuator using hierarchal single-walled carbon nanotube films as double electrodes separated by a chitosan-ionic liquid electrolyte. This design achieved superfast response times and ultrahigh power density, setting a new benchmark for flexible, lightweight actuators.
