Zhimin Zhou is a key figure in astronomical instrumentation and machine learning, whose work bridges cutting-edge robotics and data science. His primary research areas include robotic fiber positioning systems for large-scale spectroscopic surveys and high-dimensional time series analysis for motion capture. Zhou’s most impactful contribution is his central role in developing the robotic multiobject focal plane system for the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), a landmark project that installed 5,020 robotic fiber positioners on the Mayall Telescope.
