About

Zhenxi Cui is a pioneering roboticist whose research bridges the frontiers of deformable object manipulation and biomicromanipulation. His work fundamentally addresses two grand challenges: how robots can intelligently handle soft, shape-changing materials, and how they can precisely interact with microscopic biological entities. In deformable object manipulation, Cui developed novel approaches for generalizing coupled Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMPs), enabling robots to fold thin, flexible materials without requiring complex physical models—a breakthrough that linearizes traditionally nonconvex control problems. His 2022 paper on this topic has garnered 26 citations, establishing a foundation for future work in soft robotics and automated manufacturing. Simultaneously, Cui has made transformative contributions to assisted reproductive technology through his development of robotic negative dielectrophoresis (nDEP) tweezers. His 2020 work on automated embryo manipulation and rotation, cited 15 times, replaces conventional pick-place methods that risk damaging embryos with a non-contact, precisely controllable alternative. His subsequent optimization of single-particle micropatterning systems (10 citations) further demonstrates his ability to engineer complete automation pipelines for micro-object handling. Cui’s dual expertise in macro-scale deformable objects and micro-scale biological manipulation positions him as a uniquely versatile researcher, whose work promises to revolutionize both industrial automation and clinical embryology.
