About
Zhangwei Hu is pioneering the integration of robotics and optical coherence tomography (OCT) for high-resolution, large-area biomedical imaging. His research focuses on developing robotic OCT systems that overcome the traditional trade-off between imaging resolution and field of view, particularly for complex, irregular biological surfaces. Hu’s major contribution is the invention of robot-assisted OCT angiography (OCTA), which uses a robotic arm to dynamically track and scan sample surfaces, enabling whole-brain microvascular imaging with unprecedented depth-resolved detail. His most cited work, "Whole Brain Micro-Vascular Imaging Using Robot Assisted Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography" (2022, 23 citations), established this foundational technique. Building on this, Hu developed the Fast Adaptive Focus Tracking Robotic OCT (FACT-ROCT) system for intraoperative use, achieving real-time tumor grading and large-area microvascular imaging during human spinal cord surgery (2025). This breakthrough addresses a critical unmet need in neurosurgery, offering surgeons in vivo, multifunctional guidance for precise tumor resection.
