About

Yunfei Ru is pioneering the development of adaptive soft materials that respond intelligently to environmental cues. Her research centers on ionogels and organohydrogels—polymer networks imbued with ionic liquids or water—engineered to exhibit switchable adhesion, friction, and mechanical properties. In her most cited work (2022, 22 citations), Ru introduced thermoresponsive ionogels that toggle adhesion in both air and underwater environments by leveraging lower critical solution temperature (LCST) phase behavior. By blending two structurally similar ionic liquids, she achieved precise tuning of the responsive temperature from 32 °C to 100 °C, enabling on-demand underwater gripping. Her 2020 study (10 citations) advanced magnetic-programmable organohydrogels with reconfigurable networks, offering consecutively programmable mechanical homeostasis beyond simple soft–hard duality—a breakthrough for soft robotics and biomedical devices. Most recently (2025, 9 citations), Ru unveiled “friction memory” ionogels that maintain sticky or slippery states via thermolocking metastable phases, mimicking biological hysteretic friction recovery. This work opens new avenues for adaptive surfaces and haptic interfaces. With growing citation impact and a clear trajectory toward intelligent, multi-responsive materials, Yunfei Ru is establishing herself as a rising leader in stimuli-responsive polymer engineering.
