About

Yukio Chino is a pioneering figure in autonomous mobile robotics, with foundational contributions to behavior-based navigation systems. His key research areas include mobile robot strategy, sensor-based navigation, and biologically inspired robotics. Chino’s most notable work, the “Self-contained mobile robot in campus road” (1987), introduced the innovative SbS (Sign Pattern Fixed Action Chain) strategy, which drew inspiration from the behavioral patterns of lower animals. This approach enabled his robot, Harunobu-4, to navigate campus roads using two color TV cameras and a 68020 VME system. The robot executed two core fixed-action behaviors: “along-target movement” following road boundaries and flowerbeds, and “toward-target movement” directed at pillars, gates, or trees. Chino’s system defined travel instructions as lists of sign patterns and fixed actions, and handled obstacle avoidance and step climbing through similar behavior modules. Though his 1987 paper has 3 citations, its conceptual influence on behavior-based robotics and autonomous navigation is significant. Chino’s work represents an early, elegant synthesis of ethology and engineering, laying groundwork for later developments in mobile robot autonomy.
