Hideo Mori is a pioneering researcher in the field of autonomous mobile robotics, whose work in the late 1980s helped lay foundational principles for intelligent robot navigation. His most notable contribution centers on the development of **Harunobu-4**, a self-contained mobile robot designed to navigate real-world campus road environments. Mori introduced an innovative behavioral strategy inspired by lower animal ethology — the **SbS (Sign-pattern-based Sequential behavior)** framework — which decomposed complex navigation tasks into structured chains of stereotyped behaviors triggered by environmental sign patterns such as road boundaries, pillars, gates, and street trees. This approach allowed the robot to achieve goal-directed and boundary-following movement, obstacle avoidance, and step negotiation using a combination of color TV cameras, ultrasonic sensors, and bumper sensors, all managed by a 68020 VME onboard computing system. Navigation routes were elegantly defined through a "travel instruction sheet" listing sign patterns and corresponding behaviors — an early precursor to modern waypoint and behavior-based navigation paradigms. Though his citation record remains modest, Mori's early systems-level thinking about biologically inspired robot autonomy represents a meaningful contribution to the historical development of mobile robotics research.
