About

Yuan Yue is a rising leader in the field of stimuli-responsive molecular materials, with a particular focus on the dynamic behavior of organic crystals. Her research masterfully integrates crystal engineering, photochemistry, and materials science to create intelligent, multi-functional systems. In her landmark 2021 study, Yue achieved a remarkable feat by engineering two distinct polymorphs of a chalcone-based molecular crystal, Form I and Form II. She demonstrated that these crystals act as multi-stimuli responsive actuators, undergoing precise, reversible curling, flipping, or expansion when exposed to heat. Crucially, she elucidated the underlying mechanisms by tracking the irreversible single-crystal-to-single-crystal phase transformations occurring at specific temperatures (e.g., 53°C). This work, which has garnered 28 citations, provides a foundational blueprint for designing soft, crystalline robots and sensors that respond to both thermal and light stimuli.
