About
Yishen Liao is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of neuroscience and robotics, whose work focuses on translating the spatial cognitive mechanisms of the rat brain into advanced navigation systems for mobile robots. Drawing inspiration from the entorhinal-hippocampal structure—the brain region responsible for spatial memory and navigation—Liao has developed computational models that replicate the firing patterns of grid cells and place cells. In his most cited work (2022, 6 citations), he constructed a rat brain spatial cell firing model on a quadruped robot, demonstrating how limb and vestibular cues can sustain navigation in darkness. His subsequent studies (2022, 4 and 3 citations) introduced brain-like navigation and spatial localization models that enable robots to build cognitive maps in real time, mimicking the rat’s innate ability to learn and navigate unfamiliar environments. Most recently (2024, 2 citations), Liao proposed a real-time cognitive map construction method that further refines this bio-inspired approach. With a growing citation record and a clear trajectory from neural mechanism to robotic application, Liao’s work is laying the groundwork for a new generation of autonomous systems that navigate with the efficiency and adaptability of a living brain.
