Cognition refers to the mental processes by which biological and artificial systems acquire, process, store, and act upon information — encompassing perception, attention, memory, reasoning, language, and goal-directed behavior. In robotics and AI, cognition is studied to understand how machines can replicate or complement human-like intelligence, drawing on neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy to build systems capable of adaptive, context-aware behavior. Frameworks such as embodied, situated, grounded, and distributed ("4E") cognition have profoundly shaped modern robotics, shifting design away from purely abstract symbolic reasoning toward architectures that tightly couple perception, body, and environment. Research in cognitive developmental robotics explores how intelligent capabilities can emerge progressively, mirroring human developmental trajectories. Understanding cognition also informs human-robot collaboration, trust, anthropomorphism, and social interaction — critical factors as robots enter healthcare, service, and everyday environments. Ultimately, advances in cognitive science enable robots and AI systems to move beyond rigid, preprogrammed responses toward flexible, meaningful engagement with the complex, dynamic world they share with humans.
