About
Yidan Lyu is a pioneering researcher at the intersection of soft robotics and pharmaceutical engineering, whose work is redefining oral drug delivery systems. Her primary research focuses on developing intelligent, robot-enabled platforms that can reside in the gastrointestinal tract for controlled and responsive drug release. Lyu’s major contributions include the creation of a gastric retentive robotic capsule designed for emergency-prepared oral drug delivery, a breakthrough that addresses the critical gap in medical readiness by enabling long-term, internalized drug storage with rapid on-demand activation. This work, validated in canine models, has garnered significant attention for its potential to transform emergency medicine. Her highly cited 2023 review on soft robot-enabled controlled release of oral drug formulations (20 citations) provides a comprehensive taxonomy of state-of-the-art systems, including resident, shape-programming, locomotive, and integrated soft robots. By merging soft robotics with pharmaceutical kinetics, Lyu is pioneering a new class of “active” oral drug delivery devices that promise to move beyond passive pills, offering unprecedented control over drug timing, location, and dosage.
