Yi-Chaio Sui’s research has centered on fuzzy mathematics and control theory, with a particular focus on developing novel fuzzy number frameworks for engineering applications. His most cited work, “The Development of Half-circle Fuzzy Numbers and Application in Fuzzy Control” (2010), which received 25 citations, proposed a new class of fuzzy numbers designed to enhance the precision and adaptability of fuzzy control systems. However, this paper was later retracted in 2013 following a major investigation by the *Journal of Vibration and Control* and SAGE Publishing, which uncovered a peer review ring involving fabricated identities and assumed names. The investigation revealed that the ring appeared to center around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE), leading to the retraction of Sui’s paper along with others. This case has since become a cautionary example in discussions of academic integrity and peer review manipulation, highlighting the importance of rigorous oversight in scholarly publishing. While Sui’s technical contributions to fuzzy number theory remain part of the literature, his career is now most notably associated with this breach of research ethics.
