About

Yaping Huai is a researcher at the forefront of rehabilitation robotics and neural engineering, dedicated to restoring motor function for stroke survivors. Her work uniquely bridges the gap between human intention and machine assistance, focusing on two critical areas: intelligent exoskeleton control and brain-computer interface (BCI) systems. In her 2022 paper on hemiplegic exoskeletons, Huai developed an admittance control method that allows the robot to respond compliantly to a patient’s residual movement, significantly improving comfort and safety during rehabilitation training. This work addresses the critical challenge of mechanical stiffness in wearable robots, making therapy more natural and effective. More recently, her pioneering 2025 pilot study explores the integration of motor imagery-based BCI with a robotic hand for upper limb rehabilitation in ischemic stroke patients. This research is among the first to investigate how neural activity changes during BCI-driven robotic therapy, identifying preliminary neural markers of recovery. While her citation counts (2 and 1) are modest, reflecting the emerging nature of her work, Huai’s contributions are foundational to a new generation of patient-centered neurorehabilitation technologies that adapt to the user’s physiological state.
