About

Yanzhuo Wei is pioneering the next generation of smart orthopedic implants, merging advanced materials science with laser-based sensor technology. Her key research focuses on carbon-fiber-reinforced poly-ether-ether-ketone (CFR-PEEK) composites—biocompatible, X-ray-transparent materials that are mechanically close to bone and increasingly favored over traditional metal implants. Wei’s major contribution lies in developing a laser direct-write method to embed strain sensors directly onto CFR-PEEK surfaces, enabling real-time, wireless monitoring of implant performance without compromising the material’s structural integrity. Her landmark 2022 paper, “Laser Direct‐Write Sensors on Carbon‐Fiber‐Reinforced Poly‐Ether–Ether–Keton for Smart Orthopedic Implants,” has already garnered 34 citations, reflecting its immediate impact on the field. By solving the critical challenge of integrating sensing capabilities into load-bearing, body-stable implants, Wei is paving the way for “smart” orthopedic devices that can provide continuous feedback on healing and mechanical stress. Her work stands at the intersection of materials engineering, biomedical devices, and additive manufacturing, offering a transformative approach to personalized, data-driven patient care.
