About
Yanzhao Zhang is pioneering the field of supernumerary robotic limbs—wearable, assistive devices that augment the human body to aid individuals with motor impairments. His research focuses on human–robot coordination and rehabilitation robotics, with a primary goal of restoring independence to stroke survivors and elderly patients. In his highly cited 2023 work, Zhang introduced a flexible wearable supernumerary robotic limb inspired by the dexterity of an elephant’s trunk tip, using bending pneumatic muscles to assist chronic stroke patients with finger rehabilitation and grasping.
