About
Yang Shengsheng is a leading figure in lunar exploration, whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of the Moon’s most challenging environmental hazard: lunar dust. His primary research focuses on planetary surface processes and in-situ measurements of the lunar regolith. Shengsheng’s most significant contribution came from the Chang’E-3 mission, where he led the first-ever in situ measurements of lunar dust at the landing site in the northern Mare Imbrium. This landmark 2019 study, which has garnered 29 citations, provided critical, direct data on dust particle properties and dynamics, confirming that lunar dust is indeed the most crucial environmental problem on the Moon. By moving beyond Earth-based simulations, his work delivered essential insights for future mission design, astronaut safety, and equipment durability.
