About
Yan Qiu is a robotics researcher whose work bridges the critical gap between surgical precision and agricultural automation. Qiu’s primary research areas include minimally invasive surgery (MIS) systems, humanoid underactuated manipulation, and adaptive grasping algorithms. In their pioneering 2019 study, Qiu introduced a novel dynamic field tracking algorithm for a mirror-holding robot designed to assist surgeons during MIS. This system autonomously tracks surgical instruments and focal points, reducing the need for an assistant to hold the endoscope and thereby improving operative efficiency and visual stability. Although early in its citation history (4 citations), this work lays a foundational framework for intelligent surgical assistance. More recently, in 2025, Qiu addressed a key challenge in agricultural robotics with a study on fruit grasping using a humanoid underactuated manipulator and an adaptive grasping algorithm. By overcoming the lack of generalizability in conventional fruit-picking robots, Qiu’s approach enhances grasping adaptability and stability across different fruit types, marking a significant step toward versatile, real-world robotic harvesting. With a clear trajectory from surgical to agricultural robotics, Yan Qiu is establishing a reputation for developing adaptive, task-specific robotic systems that operate reliably in unstructured environments.
