About
Xili Lu is an emerging materials scientist whose research sits at the dynamic intersection of liquid crystal polymers, smart materials, and soft robotics. Best known for a landmark 2018 study — now boasting 358 citations — Lu pioneered the synthesis of gold nanorod-doped azobenzene liquid-crystalline dynamic networks, demonstrating how near-infrared and UV light can be harnessed synergistically to achieve unprecedented photocontrol of mechanical actuation in polymer nanocomposites. This work established Lu as a leading voice in stimuli-responsive materials design. Building on this foundation, Lu has made significant contributions to structurally adaptive polymers, exploring how dynamic covalent and supramolecular bonds enable self-healing, shape-memory, and liquid crystal functionalities — work recognized in a widely read 2021 review.
