About
Xiangxiang Jiang is a leading figure in the development of next-generation astronomical instrumentation, with a primary focus on fully robotic, large-aperture telescope systems. Their most significant contribution is spearheading the international collaboration for the New Robotic Telescope (NRT), a groundbreaking 4-meter diameter fully robotic facility destined for the Observatory of the Roque de los Muchachos (ORM). This project represents a paradigm shift in observational astronomy, aiming to combine a large collecting area with the agility and efficiency of autonomous operation. Jiang’s work on the NRT, detailed in their highly cited 2021 report, addresses the critical challenge of enabling rapid, unmanned response to transient events while maximizing scientific output under superb atmospheric conditions. By integrating advanced automation and control systems, Jiang is directly shaping the future of time-domain astronomy. Though early in its deployment, the NRT project has already garnered significant international attention, positioning Jiang as a key architect of the next era of intelligent, high-cadence sky surveys.
