About

Wen‐Li Chen is a leading materials scientist whose research focuses on the synthesis and engineering of advanced carbon nanomaterials, particularly graphene aerogels, for applications in soft robotics and smart actuators. Chen’s most significant contribution is the development of a groundbreaking natural drying strategy for fabricating graphene aerogels, a low-cost and simple method that overcomes traditional processing limitations. This work, published in 2016 and cited over 300 times, produced aerogels with ultralarge reversible compressibility of up to 99% and a tunable Poisson’s ratio ranging from −0.30 to 0.46—a remarkable feat that allows precise control over material deformation. These properties open new possibilities for soft actuators that can mimic biological movements. By demonstrating how structural design at the nanoscale can yield macroscopic mechanical tunability, Chen has provided a scalable pathway for next-generation flexible devices. This achievement not only highlights Chen’s ingenuity in materials processing but also underscores the potential of graphene aerogels in adaptive, responsive systems, making Chen a key figure in the field of functional nanomaterials.
