About

WeiKang Zheng is a leading observational astrophysicist whose work spans the high-energy universe, from the most distant gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) to the nearest supernovae. A key contributor to the Robotic Optical Transient Search Experiment (ROTSE-III), Zheng has been instrumental in probing the early universe. His landmark 2007 study on GRB 060927 (66 citations) achieved the earliest rest-frame detection of optical emission from a GRB, providing critical insights into the end of the cosmic dark ages at a redshift of 5.47. He has also advanced our understanding of optically dark bursts, such as GRB 051028, and derived the optical luminosity function of GRBs from a uniform ROTSE-III sample. More recently, Zheng has turned his expertise to nearby supernovae, leading a Hubble Space Telescope snapshot survey (2024) that has captured high-resolution images of the best-studied events within 30 Mpc. With over 80 citations across his most-cited works, Zheng’s career demonstrates a rare versatility—bridging the farthest explosions in the cosmos with the closest stellar deaths, all while pushing the limits of robotic telescope technology.
