About
P. Jakobsson is a leading figure in gamma-ray burst (GRB) astrophysics, whose work has fundamentally advanced our understanding of the early universe and the physics of these cataclysmic explosions. His research focuses on the optical and polarimetric follow-up of GRB afterglows, using rapid-response robotic telescopes to capture emission mere seconds after the initial burst. A landmark contribution was his team’s detection of GRB 060927 at a redshift of 5.47, providing one of the earliest rest-frame optical observations of a GRB and demonstrating their power as probes of the end of the cosmic Dark Ages. This work, cited over 66 times, helped establish GRBs as beacons for studying the distant universe. His 1999 study of GRB 990123’s optical afterglow, with over 112 citations, provided critical constraints on the fireball model. More recently, Jakobsson has pioneered spectropolarimetry of early afterglows, as seen in his work on GRB 191221B, which combines data from the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) and the MASTER Global Robotic Network to probe magnetic field structures. His contributions to rapid optical identification of poorly localized events, such as Fermi GBM GRB 140801A, have been instrumental in maximizing the scientific return of space-based observatories.
