About

W.P. Burmeister is a structural biologist whose work has significantly advanced our understanding of viral proteins, particularly through the lens of X-ray crystallography. His research centers on the structural genomics of herpesviruses, with a major focus on Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), a pathogen linked to infectious mononucleosis, carcinomas, and immunoproliferative diseases. In a landmark 2006 study (44 citations), Burmeister led a structural genomics project targeting 23 open reading frames from the EBV genome, updating its annotation and providing critical insights into the architecture of its 86 proteins. This work laid the foundation for understanding viral replication and pathogenesis at the molecular level. Beyond his biological discoveries, Burmeister made pivotal contributions to crystallographic infrastructure. He was instrumental in developing the ID14 "Quadriga" beamline at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF), a high-brilliance undulator beamline dedicated to monochromatic macromolecular crystallography (1998, 28 citations). This facility enabled researchers worldwide to solve protein structures with unprecedented speed and resolution.
