Tomoyuki Sasaki is a leading orthopedic researcher whose work bridges the critical gap between surgical precision and robotic rehabilitation in knee medicine. His primary research areas include anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction biomechanics and the application of robotic exoskeletons for post-operative recovery. Sasaki’s most influential contribution is his landmark 2005 study on femoral tunnel positioning in ACL reconstruction, which has garnered over 330 citations. In this work, he demonstrated that grafts placed within the anatomical footprint of the ACL restore knee kinematics and in situ forces more effectively than those placed in traditional isometric positions—a finding that has helped reshape surgical techniques toward more anatomic, function-preserving repairs. More recently, Sasaki has pioneered the clinical use of the single-joint hybrid assistive limb (HAL-SJ), a robotic exoskeleton, for rehabilitation after total knee arthroplasty.
