Takashi Imaida is a pioneering researcher in space robotics, best known for his groundbreaking work in ground-space bilateral teleoperation under extreme time delays. His key research areas include teleoperation, space robotics, and kinesthetic coupling—the transmission of force feedback between a human operator and a remote robot. Imaida’s most significant contribution is the first-ever bilateral teleoperation experiment using Japan’s Engineering Test Satellite VII (ETS-VII) in 1999, where he successfully controlled a robot arm in orbit from the ground despite a round-trip communication delay of six to seven seconds. His 2004 paper on this experiment, which has garnered over 216 citations, demonstrated that direct bilateral coupling could remain stable under such challenging conditions—a milestone for future space missions requiring real-time human-robot interaction.
