About

Steven B. Cannady is a leading head and neck oncologic surgeon whose research has fundamentally advanced the surgical management of oropharyngeal cancer, particularly through the application of transoral robotic surgery (TORS). His work centers on refining TORS techniques to improve both oncologic outcomes and quality of life for patients with HPV-positive and HPV-negative oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Dr. Cannady made a landmark contribution to the management of occult mucosal primaries, demonstrating how TORS-assisted endoscopy can identify hidden tumors in patients presenting with cervical metastasis from an unknown source—a critical advance that spares patients unnecessary, morbid treatment. His research portfolio, with papers accumulating hundreds of citations, has established benchmarks for recurrence risk and salvage outcomes after TORS, and he has pioneered strategies for managing complex anatomical challenges, such as retropharyngeal carotid arteries, using microvascular reconstruction. Notably, his work on preoperative circulating tumor HPV DNA is shaping the future of precision surgical staging. Dr. Cannady’s investigations into oncologic outcomes for older patients and those with adverse features have directly informed clinical guidelines, solidifying his reputation as a surgeon-scientist who translates rigorous data into tangible improvements in patient care.
