Steffen Mueller is a prominent robotics researcher whose work sits at the intersection of human-robot interaction, assistive technology, and socially intelligent mobile systems. Over more than a decade, he has made substantial contributions to the design, implementation, and real-world evaluation of service robots deployed in demanding everyday environments. Mueller's research spans two major application domains. In retail robotics, his long-running ShopBot and TOOMAS projects produced one of the first interactive mobile shopping guide robots tested extensively in real home improvement stores, earning over 250 combined citations and demonstrating the practical viability of autonomous robots in complex public spaces. Equally influential is his sustained work in assistive robotics for vulnerable populations: through the European FP7 CompanionAble project and the German SERROGA initiative, he developed socially assistive robot companions for elderly individuals with mild cognitive impairment, supporting independent living at home — work that has accumulated nearly 460 citations across multiple publications. His ROREAS project further extended this impact into clinical rehabilitation, introducing a mobile robotic coach to support stroke patients in walking and orientation training.
