About

Shiyang Shi is pioneering the frontier of soft robotics and wearable electronics through innovative research on liquid metal technologies. Their work centers on harnessing the unique properties of gallium-indium alloys to create flexible, stretchable, and autonomous systems. Shi’s most impactful contribution, the development of a directly printable and adhesive liquid metal ink for wearable devices (2024, 27 citations), addresses a critical challenge in manufacturing flexible electronics by enabling seamless integration with fabrics and skin for applications in human–machine interaction and soft robotics. Building on this foundation, Shi has also explored autonomous liquid metal droplets actuated by ion diffusion (2025), demonstrating a self-propelled droplet-based machine that draws inspiration from living organisms. This work introduces a novel mechanism for controllable motion through surrounding ion interactions, pushing the boundaries of embodied energy and intelligence in micro-robotics.
