About

Shijia Gu is pioneering the frontier of soft robotics, with a focus on achieving unprecedented locomotion and environmental adaptability. Her research centers on the design and fabrication of highly flexible robots, drawing inspiration from nature to solve complex engineering challenges. A major contribution is her work on a meniscus-climbing system, which resulted in a 3D-printed fully soft robot capable of highly flexible, three-dimensional locomotion at the liquid–air interface—a significant leap from the conventional two-dimensional constraints in the field (32 citations). More recently, Gu has addressed the critical challenge of operating in harsh environments. She developed a 4D-printed, jellyfish-inspired soft robot using non-Euclidean plates, which demonstrates stable and reliable performance in diverse organic solvents (27 citations). This work opens new possibilities for exploration and manipulation in chemically aggressive settings. By integrating advanced 4D printing with bio-inspired design, Gu is not only expanding the functional envelope of soft robotics but also laying the groundwork for intelligent systems that can operate in previously inaccessible domains.
