Dr. Shaochuang Liu is a leading figure in planetary robotics, specializing in the precise navigation and autonomous operation of rovers on extraterrestrial surfaces. His research focuses on stereo vision calibration, rover positioning, and terrain interaction modeling, critical for mission success on the Moon and Mars. Dr. Liu’s most impactful contribution is his work on the self-calibration of the Chang’e-3 lunar rover’s stereo vision system, published in 2017 and cited 18 times. This study introduced a bundle block adjustment method to correct camera distortions and alignment errors directly on the lunar surface, dramatically improving the rover’s ability to reconstruct 3D terrain and navigate autonomously. Building on this, his 2020 paper on a geometry-based slip prediction model (16 citations) provided a novel framework for anticipating wheel slip on loose regolith, enhancing rover safety and path planning.
