About

Dr. Youqing Ma is a leading figure in planetary rover vision and positioning, whose work has been instrumental in the success of China’s deep-space exploration missions. Her research centers on high-precision stereo vision, hand–eye calibration, and autonomous navigation for extraterrestrial rovers. Dr. Ma’s most significant contribution is the development of a self-calibration method for the Chang’e-3 lunar rover’s stereo vision system, based on bundle block adjustment. This work, which has garnered 18 citations, solved a critical challenge: enabling the rover to maintain accurate 3D mapping and positioning without manual intervention on the lunar surface. She further advanced this field by analyzing the positioning accuracy of the Zhurong Mars rover’s hand–eye system—a complex assembly of navigation cameras and a mast mechanism. Her study provided essential insights for terrain reconstruction and mission planning on the Red Planet. By directly addressing the real-world constraints of space robotics, Dr. Ma’s research has laid the groundwork for more autonomous and reliable exploration of the Moon and Mars.
