About
Dr. Shan-hui Hsu is a leading figure in biomaterials and tissue engineering, renowned for pioneering work in smart hydrogels and advanced additive manufacturing. Her research focuses on creating biomimetic, biodegradable materials that respond dynamically to physiological stimuli, bridging the gap between synthetic constructs and natural tissues. A standout contribution is the development of a biomimetic bilayer hydrogel actuator using thermoresponsive gelatin methacryloyl–poly(N-isopropylacrylamide), which achieves programmable, temperature-driven deformation while maintaining biodegradability—a critical advance for soft robotics and regenerative medicine. This work, published in 2023, has already garnered 60 citations, reflecting its immediate impact. Dr. Hsu also made early strides in scaffold fabrication with the design of a frozen-form additive manufacturing system (2016, 16 citations), enabling the creation of scaffolds with hierarchical porosity for enhanced cell infiltration and nutrient transport. Her innovative integration of 3D printability with physiological functionality positions her at the forefront of next-generation tissue engineering solutions.
