Sean Mahoney’s research bridges two transformative frontiers in robotics: human augmentation and human-robot trust. His early work pioneered the concept of “extenders”—robotic systems worn by humans to amplify physical strength during material handling tasks. In his foundational 1991 paper (91 citations), Mahoney established the dynamics, control, and stability principles for these wearable manipulators, laying the groundwork for modern exoskeletons and force-amplifying robotics.
