About
Satoru Komada is a pioneering figure in space telerobotics, whose work has fundamentally advanced the capability for dexterous, remote manipulation in the extreme environment of orbit. His primary research areas center on sensor-fused telerobotics, autonomous robotic systems, and precise extravehicular operations for satellites. Komada’s most significant contribution is his leadership in developing the Advanced Robotic Hand System (ARH), which became the world’s first precise extravehicular robot aboard the Engineering Test Satellite VII (ETS-VII), also known as “Hikoboshi.” His seminal 2002 paper, "Precise EV robot: flight model and telerobotic operation for ETS-VII," which has garnered 14 citations, details the flight model and the groundbreaking telerobotic control methods that enabled this feat. This work demonstrated the feasibility of a multi-degree-of-freedom manipulator performing delicate tasks in space via ground-based commands.
