S. B. Pandey is a leading figure in the observational study of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), with a particular focus on their prompt optical emission and early afterglow phases. His major contributions include the discovery and detailed analysis of extraordinarily bright prompt optical flashes, such as that from GRB 060117, which exhibited a rapid temporal flux decay and a remarkably high peak brightness. This work, cited 36 times, provided critical insights into the physics of the central engine and the nature of the relativistic jet. Pandey has also advanced our understanding of reverse shock signatures in GRB afterglows, as demonstrated in his multi-wavelength analysis of an optically bright burst using the BOOTES-4 robotic telescope alongside Fermi and Swift data.
