About
Ruinan Mu is pioneering the robotic technologies that will unlock the Moon’s deep subsurface. As a researcher focused on extraterrestrial drilling and sample acquisition, Mu’s work directly addresses the immense engineering challenges of accessing and preserving scientific samples from other worlds. Their most influential contribution is the development of a predictive dynamic model for a “mole-type” burrowing robot, detailed in a 2023 paper that has garnered 11 citations. This work simulates the autonomous drilling and steering processes required to penetrate the lunar regolith, treating the locomotive module as a rigid rod to analyze critical steering parameters. Expanding on this, Mu has designed a novel dual-Archimedes screw deep drilling system (8 citations) for efficient subsurface access. Recognizing that the journey home is as critical as the collection itself, Mu also engineered an automatic sealing mechanism to protect extraterrestrial samples from the harsh environmental changes of pressure, temperature, and vibration during return transit.
